Water Family Deck — Learn Pokémon TCG (Standard 2026)
Format: Standard 2026 (Regulation Marks H / I / J) Archetype cost: roughly $12–$18 in singles Difficulty: Beginner — a clean, single-evolution teaching deck
This is the "tempo & control" half of the Water vs. Grass Battle Box — a simple, all-commons kitchen-table deck that teaches you to control the pace of the game. You evolve Buizel into Floatzel, then use Whirlpool to strip your opponent's Energy away so they can never quite get going. It's a ~40-card intro deck built to learn on, not a tournament list.
Family & Friends rule: this deck contains no
ex, no Mega, no ACE SPEC, and no holo/chase cards — commons, uncommons, and regular rares only. It's built to be affordable, sharable, and easy to learn.
The Deck List (40 cards · intro deck)
Every card carries a legal H / I / J regulation mark. This is a beginner teaching deck, so it's a focused 40 cards rather than a full 60.

Deliberately excluded (do NOT add): Poké Ball and Pokémon Catcher have no confirmed legal printing in this card pool — use the Ancient Scroll items above instead. Golduck (ASC 40) has an unverified regulation mark and is left out until it's checked. None of these are in the list.
What This Deck Teaches You
- Evolving. Buizel → Floatzel — one clean step. A perfect first evolution to learn on.
- Energy attachment. One Water Energy per turn; the deck runs plenty so you always have one to play.
- Tempo / energy denial. Floatzel's Whirlpool (30 damage + discard an Energy) teaches the most important control idea in the game: slowing your opponent down is as good as dealing damage.
Your First Few Turns
- Get a Buizel down. Use Buddy-Buddy Poffin or Ultra Ball if you need to find one.
- Attach a Water Energy every turn. Never skip it.
- Evolve into Floatzel as soon as you can.
- Use Whirlpool to strip their Energy. Every Energy you discard is a turn they can't attack — that's you controlling the game.
- When you're ahead, swing bigger with Floatzel's Aqua Slash to close it out.
How to Play It
Play patiently. Your job isn't to race — it's to keep your opponent one step behind by knocking their Energy off the board. Against the Grass deck in the box (which wants to lock you with status), controlling tempo is exactly how you stay in front.
