What this box teaches
The best way to learn Pokémon TCG is to play it — and the best way to play it is against someone else who's learning too. That's what the Battle Box is: two complete decks, balanced against each other, each one teaching a different half of the game.
- Delphox (Fire) teaches the "build up and unleash" side — evolving Pokémon, using an Ability every turn, and scaling your damage as the game goes on.
- Fighting teaches the "hit fast" side — attacking early, managing Energy under pressure, and racing for Prize cards.
Play them against each other a few times and you'll have hands-on experience with almost every core rule in the game: evolving, attaching Energy, using Abilities, choosing attacks, and taking Prizes. Then swap decks and see the game from the other side.
Play your first game together
Set both players up the same way — this shared setup works for either deck.
- Shuffle and draw 7 cards each. Make sure you have at least one Basic Pokémon in hand; if you don't, show your hand, reshuffle, and draw 7 again (your opponent draws an extra card when this happens).
- Put one Basic Pokémon in the Active spot (face down until both players are ready), and up to five more on your Bench.
- Set your Prizes. Put the top 6 cards of your deck aside face down — these are the Prize cards you'll take as you knock out the other player's Pokémon.
- Flip a coin to decide who goes first. The Fighting deck loves going first (more pressure, sooner); Delphox is happy going either way.
- Take turns: draw a card, attach one Energy, play any Trainers or evolutions you like, then attack. First player to take all 6 Prizes wins.
- Then trade decks and run it back. Seeing both game plans is the fastest way to actually get how the game flows.
Every card in both decks is a real, tournament-legal card — so once you've learned the ropes here, you're ready to step up to the competitive builds in the deck index.
